Nowadays, modern ore mills are in somewhat less complicated mechanically than those which were operated twenty or more years ago. However, the detailed operation and control of the modern equipment is much involved. Typically flowsheets show many operations such as crushing, classification, pumping, grinding, cyanidation, flotation and dewatering. The control of these processes needs more higher degree of technical skill than did the plants of an earlier day when the gold ores permitted a lot of flexibility. Now, the the automation needs a very careful control due to algorithms change with ores.
It is well know that old procedures were mechanical. They could be and often were carried out by personnel with little or not technical knowledge and training who based their decisions on rules of thumb criteria. Probably, many of these workers would see very hard and annoying to operate new plants in this century. To control such a mill, exactly what is happening in each department, just what each each piece of equipment is supposed to do and how efficiently it is performing its function must be known and not assumed. If the results are not the expected, the operator must be able to understand the reason of the problem and how to modify the operative conditions in order to get the right results.
